Interamerican Foundation and El Rescate fostering Transnational Relations

IAF Honored for Fostering Transnational Relations

ARLINGTON, Va. — On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, El Rescate, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that provides legal and humanitarian services to immigrants, honored individuals and organizations that share its values. The IAF received “Special recognition for fostering transnational relations,” a reference to its grant assistance for organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean that develop ways for immigrants in the United States to effectively support grassroots initiatives in their home communities.

The awards gala, held at the University of Southern California on March 23, featured keynote speakers Congresswoman Judy Chu and William Walker, former U.S. ambassador to El Salvador. Rep. Chu further acknowledged the IAF’s work with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition. Among the other honorees were Andrew Stern, former president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), for the union’s commitment to immigrant’s rights; Fred Niehaus, former vice-president of Western Union, for his leadership advancing the company’s record of social responsibility; and Dick McCall, vice-president of Creative Associates International, for his contributions to El Salvador’s peace process.

El Rescate was founded in 1981 by Salvadoran refugees and the Southern California Ecumenical Council to provide counsel on immigration and labor problems and to support efforts toward economic development. It serves immigrants from more than 29 countries. Some 30 percent of its clients are not from Central America: most asylum seekers are African; the majority of applicants to its credit program are Armenians.

The Inter-American Foundation, a foreign assistance agency of the United States government, responds to development proposals from grassroots groups in Latin America and the Caribbean and the organizations that support them. Since beginning operations in 1972, the IAF has made more than 4,900 grants worth over $665 million. Together, the IAF and its grantees have worked to improve the conditions of hundreds of thousands of families in communities throughout the hemisphere.
